Seville's Cathedral: "Let's build a church so big that those who see it will think we're crazy". With these words began the project of building the third largest cathedral in the world. And of course, it can be said at first sight that the Cathedral of Seville was built to impress!
Built from 1401 onwards on the foundations of an old Almohad mosque, the last stone of the dome was laid 100 years later.
The first thing that impresses you when you enter the Cathedral is undoubtedly the sense of scale: It's huge and the interior is sumptuously decorated. You shouldn't miss it:
-The Main Chapel and its Gothic altar made up of 45 panels representing the life of Christ
-The tomb of Christopher Columbus
-The collections of jewellery and paintings
La Giralda: The entrance to the Cathedral also offers you the possibility to visit La Giralda, the bell tower of the Cathedral of Seville. This minaret of the old mosque was modified by the Christians: they added the upper part to be able to add bells (more than 24 in total!).
You can climb to the top of La Giralda and admire the magnificent panoramic view of the whole city of Seville. There are no steps to get there, just a series of inclined ramps. Legend has it that it was made with ramps instead of stairs so that the imam (at the time of the mosque) could climb with his donkey during the call to prayer.
Alcazar de Sevilla: Right next to the cathedral is the second most important monument in Seville: The Alcazar de Sevilla (Royal Alcazar).
The Alcazar is still a royal residence: when he comes to Seville, the King of Spain lives here! It is actually the oldest royal palace in Europe.
Only this Arab and Moorish palace represents the magnificence of Mudejar art. The interior decorations are beautiful, every room and courtyard is decorated in every square inch with geometric motifs, vegetation and tiles.
General Archive of the Indies: Next to the cathedral and the Alcazar of Seville, there is another place, less touristy, that is worth visiting: the General Archive of the Indies. The visit is free and the main interest is the remarkable architecture of the building. The interior is very beautiful!
However, don't expect to see the famous archives, they are kept out of sight. And yes, all the cardboard archives in the libraries are empty!
Barrio de Santa Cruz: All the most popular monuments are located in the Barrio de Santa Cruz, the historical heart of Seville. Therefore, it is also the most touristic place!
You can walk through the pedestrian streets, have a coffee or lunch in one of the many bars and restaurants and buy souvenirs in one of the many shops. It is a very pleasant place to walk, with its typical courtyards, whitewashed houses and beautiful piazzas.
Plaza de España: It was built in 1928 for the 1929 Ibero-American exhibition to celebrate the discovery of America by the Spanish conquistadors. To face the river and the arrival of ships from America, the square was designed in the shape of a half circle.
Maria Luisa Park: Opposite the Plaza de España is the most famous park in Seville: Maria Luisa Park. After the crowds and the heat, it's the perfect destination! You are sure to enjoy the coolness of its shady alleys, ponds, small lakes and fountains.
As you walk, you'll find Plaza America, nicknamed the "Plaza de las Palomas" by Sevillians for the large number of birds that enjoy the food scraps (and the people who feed them!).
Indispensable during your walk in the park: the fountain of the frogs, the fountain of the lions and the island of the ducks.
La Maestranza Bullring: You can visit the museum and enter the arena. Every year, the Bullring hosts one of the most important fairs in the world: the April Fair.
Whether you are for or against, the bullfighting tradition is very strong in Andalusia and bullfights are a very important event in Andalusian life.
Torre del Oro: Near the Plaza de Toros, you can see the Torre del Oro, or "Tower of Gold" in English. Situated on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, it was built at the beginning of the 13th century to reinforce the city's military defences. To block traffic on the river, the Moors used a huge chain connected to another tower on the other side of the river.
Today, the Torre de Oro houses the Naval Museum, with miniature models and old navigation tools. At the top, there is also a panoramic terrace that offers a beautiful view of the Cathedral, the river and the Triana neighbourhood on the other side of the Guadalquivir.
Barrio de Triana: You can start your visit to Triana with the market, located just at the end of the bridge, on your right. Take the opportunity to try or buy some Spanish cheese or cold cuts!
Walking around the neighborhood is also very pleasant. Don't forget to visit a ceramic workshop, the typical art of the neighborhood.
For a nice walk along the river, take Betis Street and enjoy the beautiful view of the Torre del Oro and the center of Seville. It is also a good place to have a drink, as the street is full of cafes and restaurants.

Good transfer service. The driver was extremely friendly and provided plenty of information during our ride to the hotel. He was also the one who picked us up for our return to the airport, at an inconveniently early hour, and was punctual on both trips, arriving either on time or even a bit early.(11/14/2024) David Green
